About Me

Hello, I am Dr. Christopher Guarino.

I am a licensed psychologist in NJ, NY, and PA who is also authorized to practice interjurisdictional telepsychology (PSYPACT).

I have helped individuals make changes to improve their lives, strengthen their relationships, and overcome their challenges. I am also actively involved in teaching clinical psychology doctoral students at a local university.

Why choose to work with me?

My extensive experience helping individuals in various contexts, from community mental health to inpatient settings, has taught me to recognize the full spectrum of psychological experience. I've also learned from my work in these diverse environments to adapt my approach based on each client's strengths, needs, and goals.

I understand that reaching out can be difficult. This is why I work with each client to ensure that our relationship is a safe, supportive, and collaborative space where you feel comfortable practicing new skills and challenging old relationship patterns. Together, we will identify the changes that you want to make and develop a plan to realize them.

Education and experience

I am a graduate of the Clinical Psychology PhD program at Long Island University, Brooklyn. There, I completed placements at a college counseling center, a residential treatment center for adolescents, and a community mental health clinic. A major part of my training included rotations on psychiatric inpatient units where I treated individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses, like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Building on these experiences, I completed my year-long clinical internship at a state psychiatric hospital where I was hired upon graduation. As a staff psychologist on one of the legal units, I worked with individuals adjudicated Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity or whose charges were dismissed after they were found Incompetent to Stand Trial. I also have significant experience conducting psychological assessments, including cognitive and personality assessments as well as violence risk assessments.
